New Poems

24 March, 2006

So. Way back in March of last year—which in some ways feels like a lifetime ago—I wrote a poem for Anna, partly in answer to a challenge she issued me which was to write a poem featuring the Little Dipper, partly swept in the "currents," if you will, of my long-standing obsession with Ulysses.

It's called "Cardinal Star," and I'm right proud of it, I must say. You can read it here.

And now, a little over a year later, Spring comes again. It's astounding how much has changed since then—and how much is the same. What I mean is I feel the same person now that I was then, only more fulfilled. Like the person I was then was dormant, and now easier to express.

I wrote this poem, "Wind & Waves," to give to Anna along with her engagement ring; it's sort of a response to the first poem, or maybe a completion of it. Not an ultimate completion, because as the poem says we've many years ahead of us still—but a change to be sure; a step along the way. And one thing I'm certain of: a step in the right direction.
